Thoughts | The Importance of Avoiding Comparison In Blogging

We live in the age of social media. An age rife with people sharing their 'insta-perfect' lives full of holidays to picturesque locations, flatlay food shots and daily flawless outfits and beauty looks. With the constant promotion of this 'perfect' lifestyle, it's easy to find yourself falling into the comparison trap.

The issue of comparison is even more prevalent within the blogging world, with it being such a naturally competitive industry that relies so heavily on social media presence. It's easy to be scrolling through social media and find yourself experiencing self-doubt as a result of the 'perfect' imagery you're seeing.

If you can put your hand up and say that you struggle with comparison within your blogging life, I can tell you that you're definitely in fine company. Comparison is an evil that plagues us all at one point or another and I myself have long struggled with comparing my content to that of others.

It's human nature to compare, but it can do more damage than good as it often leaves you feeling bogged down with negativity. So let's shine a light on the importance of self-belief, shall we?

Within blogging, a large amount of what makes your blog and your brand special is its uniqueness; readers don't want to see 101 bloggers all creating the same content and rocking the same look. We all have a special thing to bring to the world - be it a character trait, talent, special quality or anything in between - and it's that thing which makes you the bloody fantastic thing you are.

It's becoming way too common to see bloggers aiming to emulate the success of full-time influencers such as Zoella, and in doing so many bloggers change the style of their content or photography, moving away from the things that made their blog beautiful in the first place and becoming a little carbon copy of these 'big' bloggers.

At the end of the day, no good can ever come from comparing your life and your journey to another's. You are not the same person; you do not have the same dreams, talents, wishes and memories. These qualities all contribute to you being the unique, creative and brilliant person you are, don't ignore them because it's not what you're seeing other people do. You should be shouting about your uniqueness from the rooftops. Focus on yourself and your own personal path because you sweetie, are killing it.

  1. Comparing my blog to other blogs led me to take a bit of a break recently as it was getting me down that much! I try and tell myself that there may be millions of blogs out there but not one writes like I do!

I ADORE your blog theme and that pinafore you're wearing - where's it from??

  3. This is such a lovely post Chloe. As a newer blogger trying to make a footprint in this big, ole world, it can seem easier to just compare myself to those that have more success than I do and try to emulate them. I have to remind myself that I have my own unique blogging voice & vision, & that's the whole point!

  4. It's so hard to not compare yourself when you see other bloggers doing so well while you're not but comparison game is bad and it would only hurt our self esteem in the end so I try my best to not let the feeling get into me.

Thank you for the post x

  5. one of my favourite sayings is 'Comparison is the Thief of Joy' - I think this is so true, and what you say about bloggers changing their content in order to emulate the success of full-time influencers are so true; I love when I read a post that's super-authentic, and it's clear its been written because the author of that blog just wants to share on their little patch of the internet! This was a great - and thought provoking = post!

  8. It's certainly hard to stop comparing yourself to other bloggers! No matter how much I know it's not a great thing to do it's something I always have to remind myself about! So many of the points you make in this article are relatable and true and it always helps to remind myself that we are never alone when it comes to this sort of thing! Thanks for sharing!
